Yankees’ George Lombard Jr. exits game vs. Boston with right knee issue

NEW YORK – George Lombard Jr. exited Saturday night’s second game of a day-night doubleheader due to right knee discomfort.

Following his second at-bat against the Red Sox, the Yankees’ rookie shortstop was replaced defensively in the top of the fourth inning at Yankee Stadium.

Lombard was headed for imaging Saturday night at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, according to the Yankees.

The play in question occurred during Lombard’s first at-bat, in Saturday night’s second inning against Red Sox’s right-hander Brayan Bello.

Lombard winced as he checked his swing on an inside pitch, which drew the attention of Yanks manager Aaron Boone and head athletic trainer Tim Lentych.

For a couple of minutes, Lombard stretched out his right leg and took a few practice swings. He ultimately stayed in the at-bat and immediately singled to left field.

Lombard played another defensive inning and lined out to left in the Yanks’ three-run third ining, when they took a 3-1 lead.

But he was replaced in the batting order by Amed Rosario, who took over at third base while Jose Caballero shifted from third base to shortstop.

Lombard, 21, was officially called up on Aug. 4, the day after MLB's trade deadline, and assumed the regular shortstop role, with Anthony Volpe demoted to Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Volpe has been playing both shortstop and second base at Triple-A, and he started Saturday night at third base, an interesting development given Amed Rosario's defensive shortcomings.

If Volpe was potentially in play to take Rosario's role as a backup infielder and right-handed hitter off the bench, he might be a quicker call-up option depending on Lombard's condition.

Lombard showed his dynamic skills as a defender with a quick release and strong arm, but he also just ended a run of committing errors in six straight games - halted in Friday night's 1-0 win vs. Boston.

Over his first 23 MLB games, Lombard is batting .253 (20-for-79) with a double, triple, two homers and six RBI.
