'Big Brother' — Who won Veto, and who had their first-ever hamburger?

A veto competition, a pair of returning alums, and a houseguest's first hamburger.

Here's a recap of "Big Brother's" Wednesday episode:

Mallory's mad

After being put on the chopping block by Head of Household Dee, Mallory proceeded to crash out. "I wish I was kind of toughing it out, but I'm not. I just don't want to be the first person that goes home," she said. Taylor, who was also put on the block alongside Yash, took her potential elimination a bit more diplomatically. "I promise you I'm still your bestie," she told Dee, sitting with her in her HOH suite. Meanwhile Mallory decided to go talk to Dee to see where her head was at, and asked her which of the nominees she'd prefer to see go home. "Yash would be a good option," Dee said. That seemed to put a little wind in Mallory's sails. "I'm Mallory and I've got this," she told herself, in a bit of self-affirmation.

Distancing from Mallory

Melody, who along with Lyric (Melody and Lyric!) quickly got close with Mallory inside the house, worked hard to distance herself from Mallory, who was suddenly poison because of her nomination status. "It's going to ruin our game right away if we don't fix it, like, today," she told Lyric, of their association with Mallory. The two of them went to visit Dee in the HOH room to further put a gap between themselves and the nominee. "It's a game, and at the end of the day, I don’t have an allegiance to her," Melody told Dee. After all, it has only been a few days. Speaking of only a few days...

Showmance heats up

Traverse City-reared pickleball instructor Rome Seymour continued his showmance with Lyric — perhaps the earliest showmance in "BB" history — which he compared to "sneaking around in high school," trying to keep the secret from their fellow houseguests. Time for a temperature check: "How are you feeling about, like, us?" Lyric asked. "I like you more and more every day, which is crazy, cuz now it's getting harder and harder to hide it," Rome answered. (This was all happening while the two were snuggling in bed, by the way.) Rome: "Do you think we would actually work in the outside world?" Lyric: "I think it's Day 4 in here." Yes, and if they don't get their heads in the game, they'll both find out how well they'll actually work in the real world, when they're outside the house and suddenly back inside it.

Fool Angela once...

Jason, the former "Drag Race" contestant, decided to play with Angela's emotions by pretending to let him "mother" her, only to turn around once she left and mock her to the cameras. He later spilled his guts to Drew, laughing about how he played Angela, and telling him how his goal is to backdoor Devens, not knowing Drew is in an alliance, the Crossovers, with Angela and Devens. Angela, known for her flair for the dramatic, was at first crushed by the Jason revelation, but then vowed her revenge. "He thinks I’m a sucker and I'm not!" she exclaimed. "I'm gonna make him think he does have me wrapped around his finger. Guess what! He's going to be laughed at, because everybody knows that I’m playing him right back, but harder. It’s fan-fricking-tastic." Fan-fricking-tastic, indeed.

Who won Veto?

With her back up against the wall, Mallory pulled out a Veto victory, in a competition that involved the return of "BB" legend Will Kirby (via video) and former "BB" player Howie Gordon (in the flesh). Mallory's win forced Dee to have to pick a replacement nominee. "I did not want to be in this position," Dee said, "but now I've gotta figure this out."

Who was the replacement nominee?

After Mallory pulled herself off the block, Dee replaced her with Ashley. Ashley had visited Dee in her HOH room earlier, and Dee was upfront with her, telling her she was a potential nominee. "I feel like I just got diagnosed with a disease: Humiliation ritual-itis," Ashley told her. After putting Ashely on the block, Dee reasoned she was just trying to keep the heat off herself after being the season's first HOH. "I'm trying to just fall back, relax, and let somebody else be in the spotlight," she said. Ashley, for her part, said she was ready to campaign to save herself with the other houseguests — "I'm gonna try to come in hot, subtly," she said — while Yash insisted, "I'm ready to show ‘em who's a bawse." OK Rick Ross, we'll see what happens on Thursday.

Expect the unexpected...

If Ashley goes home on Thursday, at least her time in the house wasn't completely without achievement: inside the house, she enjoyed her first-ever hamburger. "I've just never gotten around to it," she said, of never before enjoying a meat patty between two buns. After Rome cooked her up a burger, her first, she had a bite and rejoiced. "I'm tasting all the flavors, I'm soaking all of it in. It's so very delicious," she said...

57-year-old La Trice popped out in a bikini during the episode, showing off her body, and bragging about everything she's overcome over the years. "I'm like Robocop. Whatever you throw at me, I come back stronger, faster, bigger, better," she said, showing a fundamental misunderstanding of "Robocop," but more power to her.

"Big Brother's" live eviction episode airs at 8 p.m. Thursday on CBS and Paramount+.
