Fifty years after forming, Styxis still one of the biggest touring acts, and songs like "Mr. Roboto" and "Come Sail Away" remain playlist favorites. It’s hard to imagine attending a sporting event or watching a singing competition reality TV show without hearing "Renegade" belted out in all its glory. Like many long-running bands, the Styx lineup has changed over the years. Currently on tour, the band’s frontman is earning high praise from fans calling him “the consummate Rock & Roll showman.” Watching social media videos from recent Styx concerts in Florida certainly makes the case.
Styx’s Current Lineup and Florida Tour Buzz
Currently making the rounds through Florida amphitheaters, the current Styx lineup is comprised of James “JY” Young (guitar, vocals), Tommy Shaw (guitar, vocals), Chuck Panozzo (appearing at select shows on bass), Todd Sucherman (drums), Lawrence Gowan (keyboards, vocals) and Will Evankovich (guitar). Coverage of recent Styx shows highlights Gowan, 69, rocking like it’s 1999, when he replaced lead vocalist Dennis DeYoungand never looked back.
While many devout Styx fans still long for DeYoung’s return, Gowan’s energetic theatrics continue to dazzle audiences, with one commenting, “I've seen Styx twice and Mr. Lawrence Gowan never disappoints! The consummate rock & roll showman who plays the keyboards like no other.”
Another gushed, “Just saw them last night in Estero, for the first time ever. What a show! Go see it, thank me later.”
“Sounds great as usual,” wrote another.

The Legacy of Styx’s Hits and Staying Power
Lineup changes can be hard on fans. DeYoung was an impressive stage presence whose unique vocals were part of Styx’s iconic original sound. But the band’s staying power has always been built on their high-octane live shows and deep connection with their audience, while continuing to introduce their music to new fans as a touring staple performing more than 100 shows a year. Styx is the rare rock band whose songs have been able to transcend who is singing them.
The public’s appetite for nostalgia and ‘80s culture has never been stronger. Films like Pretty in Pink recently celebrated milestone anniversaries, while musical acts like Metallica and AC/DC continue to reign supreme as popular touring forces performing for sold-out crowds night after night.
Styx’s unique combination of progressive rock, hard rock and power ballads dominated radio in the 1970s and 1980s, with albums like The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight and Paradise Theatre helping define the era. The band’s current tour stops, fronted by Gowan, are a testament to the importance and legacy of Styx’s impressive and impactful catalog of hits.
