The pair first met at a party in 1994 and tied the knot two years later. They’ve since welcomed three children together: daughters Sawyer and Kendall and son Oakley.

With Mel being a motivational speaker, author and podcast host, the pair is very open about their relationship and often share posts on social media that reveal insight into their marriage. In January 2024, Mel posted a birthday tribute to Chris, praising him for how he navigates their family life.

“A book cannot be bound without a spine and my husband @the.chrisrobbins is that for me. He holds our family together and provides the strength, structure and support we need,” she wrote in the caption. “I am endlessly grateful to be spending my life with a person who has dedicated his life to serving other[s].”

The couple first met at a black-tie party in New York City in 1994, per The New York Times. Mel was ordering a bourbon at the bar when Chris approached her and ordered the same drink.

''We spoke for about 10 minutes and I was so struck by our similarities,'' Mel told the paper. ''We were immediately talking about our love for the outdoors. We exchanged phone numbers, and when I got home at 2 A.M., I called him. I left a message on his machine: 'Hi, this is Mel. I met you a half hour ago. Let's go for a run in the morning.' I hung up, and my roommate screamed at me.”

Mel explained that Chris was impressed by the move, and the two went for a run and had dinner together the next day. “By the time we reached Benny's Burritos, I knew I was going to marry Chris,'' she said. ''We both knew, and we actually admitted it on the third date at Jean-Claude's in SoHo.”

In October 2023, Mel reflected on their first meeting, writing in a post on Instagram, “29 years ago today, on October 28, 1994, I sat down at a bar and ordered a bourbon on the rocks, and over my shoulder I heard, ‘That sounds great, I'll have one too.’ All these years later and you are still the best part of my world @the.chrisrobbins.”

Mel and Chris tied the knot on Aug. 24, 1996, at her family’s home on Bear Lake in North Muskegon, Mich., per The New York Times. The pair chose to forgo a bridal party and instead had their close friends seat guests and get to know each other during the ceremony. Their over 200 guests were then treated to dinner under a tent by the lake.

In August 2022, Mel and Chris celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary. Mel commemorated the occasion by posting a carousel of photos with Chris, explaining in the caption their willingness to continue working on their marriage and “supporting one another’s growth.”

“After 28y as a couple - that’s what I’m the most proud of - that even thru the s----- stuff we kept shoveling thru it, weeding out problems and tending to ourselves and our relationship because we were committed to making it grow ❤️,” she wrote. “And to Chris, my favorite Trip Leader, thx for making me feel like a newly wed this week 💋 here’s to the next 26y - I love you.”

Mel and Chris are parents to three children: Sawyer, Kendall and Oakley. Three years after tying the knot, they welcomed their first daughter, Sawyer, on March 6, 1999. Their second daughter, Kendall, was born on Aug. 4, 2000, and their son, Oakley, arrived five years later on March 17, 2005.

Sawyer followed in her mom’s footsteps and helped co-write Mel’s book, The Let Them Theory, in 2024 and later joined her on the book tour. Kendall is a musician, according to her Instagram bio, while Oakley is a student at the University of Vermont, per his Instagram bio.

In May 2025, Chris shared a photo of Mel with their three kids in celebration of Mother’s Day. “@melrobbins you are a gift to this world but your greatest gift is being the best mother to our three kiddo’s. Happy Mother’s Day to the GOAT ❤️❤️❤️,” he wrote in the caption.

Chris has appeared on Mel’s podcast, The Mel Robbins Podcast, several times. In October 2024, he was featured in an episode in which the pair talked about what they’ve learned after nearly 30 years of marriage.

Mel emphasized the importance of “being present” during the smaller moments of everyday life. “The act of stopping you in the hallway or in the kitchen and putting my hands on your shoulders. Even just ten seconds. Looking into your eyes, for me, was like a complete game changer,” Chris added.

They love outdoor activities

Chris and Mel often share their love for nature on social media. They traveled to Bali together in October 2024 and climbed Mount Katahdin in Maine with their three children in August 2024.

“Our family climbed Mt. Katahdin this week! The hardest part of scaling this 5,200 foot beast? Not killing each other on the 8 hour drive in @the.chrisrobbins truck to get there! 😂,” Mel wrote on Instagram. “It was an absolute thrill to check this peak off the bucket list with our 3 kids.”

The couple also chose an adventurous activity for their honeymoon in 1996. They went fly fishing in Montana, per The New York Times.

“To us, adventure is very much about climbing mountains and telemark skiing together, but it's so much more about having an adventurous life,” Mel told the paper. “I am not at all interested in being comfortable. I always want to think, 'What's next?' We're up for anything, and we have no idea where we'll be in 10 years.”

They’re very supportive of each other

Mel and Chris are each other’s biggest supporters. In a January 2024 birthday tribute to Chris, Mel praised his ability to chase new dreams and support hers as well.

“Watching you get your masters in psychology at the age of 54 and begin a new chapter as a death Doula and integration Therapist is nothing short of awe-inspiring! I can’t wait to see how it deepens @souldegree and the impact you make guiding men on creating more meaningful lives,” she wrote. “Thank YOU for supporting my huge ambitions and for modeling emotional intelligence and love of outdoor adventure for our kids - you are our trip leader."

Mel had her own talk show, The Mel Robbins Show, in 2019, and Chris shared a heartfelt post congratulating her on Instagram.

“YOU are a gift to this world and I’m not sure congratulations says enough for this remarkable achievement,” he wrote. “Our children are so lucky to have such an incredible mother and teacher and role model. And I am grateful to be your husband, friend, lover and partner on this roller coaster called life.”
