We may have thrown their tea in the Boston Harbor, but we Americans still can’t seem to hide our fascination with the British royals. Whether it’s being glued to the TV watching King Charles’ coronation or keeping up with the latest from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, there’s something about the monarch that keeps us entertained—and, no, it’s not just because we’re still obsessed with “Hamilton.”

While we might not be able to put our finger on why we love devouring royal news today, it’s a no-brainer why we adore Princess Diana: The “people’s princess” was beloved by everyone.

We all know Princess Di was a trendsetter—mainly in the fashion world. From her biker shorts and oversized sweatshirt to her sheep sweater and, of course, the ever-iconic “revenge” dress, the princess knew how to make a statement.

And even though her clothing choices are greatly remembered today, we here at Allrecipes are more interested in her recipe choices. Because, as it turns out, Princess Di was ahead of her time when it came to her favorite foods, too.

Princess Diana’s Favorite Breakfast

The Princess of Wales often kept it simple in the kitchen, according to her former chef Darren McGrady. She frequently ate the same dishes, such as stuffed peppers for dinner, soup for lunch, and crepes soufflé when she craved something sweet. And, much like her other mealtimes, breakfast was no different.

Princess Diana loved one breakfast food so much that she ate it “every day,” according to McGrady—and it might surprise you. Her favorite morning meal was overnight oats.

Now, these aren’t the banana bread- or Reese’s-flavored overnight oats you’re thinking of, as those types of overnight oats didn’t become popularized until the 2010s. But Princess Di was eating a version of overnight oats created by a Swiss nutritionist that she discovered during a stay at a Swiss health clinic.

“She stole the recipe, came back, and said, ‘Darren, I want these for breakfast every day,’” McGrady recalled in a video.

How To Make Princess Diana’s Overnight Oats

Unlike the overnight oats you know today, Princess Di’s favorite breakfast didn’t get entirely prepped the night before. Instead, the oats were “steeped” overnight in liquid and then prepared the next morning with other nutritious ingredients.

The night before, McGrady would cover the rolled oats with liquid, then wrap the bowl in plastic and let the oats “swell up” overnight. However, instead of activating the oats with milk, like most of us do today, McGrady used orange juice.

After letting the oats soak overnight, he would prepare the dish, almost like traditional oatmeal. To the oats, McGrady added Greek yogurt, honey, lemon juice, grated Honeycrisp apple, and blueberries. He mixed the ingredients until everything was combined, then served the oats in a bowl topped with blueberries and toasted walnuts.

Adding the fruits and nuts the next morning ensures they keep their texture—so, if you aren’t a huge fan of traditional overnight oats because they can be soggy, Princess Di’s preferred method might be the one for you.

We guess it’s time to add overnight oats to our list of things Princess Diana has inspired.
