Melissa Gilbert confirmed her exit from When Calls the Heart ahead of season 14 as her husband, Timothy Busfield, continues to face legal troubles related to child sexual abuse allegations. The Little House on the Prairie star said âbudget issuesâ prompted the decision.
Why Melissa Gilbert says she wonât return to When Calls the Heart
The 62-year-old actress, who played a former Mountie forensic investigator named Inspector Georgie McGill, shared the news via an Instagram post on July 16, stating, âMany people have asked if I will be returning to When Calls the Heart this coming season. The answer to that is no, I will not. I am told this is due to âbudget issues.â That said, I wish all my sweet friends in Hope Valley a wonderful and successful season 14,â as per PEOPLE.
Following the update, fans quickly shared their disappointment in the comments. One of them wrote, âYou will be sorely missed! I grew up watching you on Little House, and seeing you on When Calls the Heart just felt so right. You added a gracious strength and dignity that the show needed.â Another commented, âVery sorry to hear this! Hallmark is losing a wonderful addition to the show!! However, many fans claimed her departure was tied to Busfieldâs legal issues, with one writing, âBudget issue is code for, âWe donât want to support you during a very difficult period in your familyâs life.'â

Two boys have accused Busfield of inappropriately touching them while he worked on The Cleaning Lady. One of the boys told a forensic child interviewer that the actor allegedly touched him when he was seven years old, reports KRQE News 13.
The 69-year-old Emmy winner was charged on February 6 with four counts of criminal sexual contact involving a child under 13; he denies the allegations. He later pleaded not guilty on February 21 after waiving arraignment and pretrial appearances. His trial is scheduled for May 2027.
