The episode sees Cami throw a kickoff party for M-Tex's offshore drilling project
The celebration is also where she chooses to fire Tommy
Big changes are on the horizon for Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) and his family on Landman.
In season 2, episode 9, Tommy and his ex-wife, Angela (Ali Larter), brace themselves for their daughter Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) to head off to college.
As Ainsley prepares to join the cheer squad at Texas Christian University (TCU) in the fall, Angela gets an emotional preview of life as an empty nester while dropping her off at cheer camp.
Meanwhile, Tommy travels to Louisiana for a launch party marking the start of M-Tex’s offshore drilling project — but the celebration quickly unravels when Cami (Demi Moore) abruptly cuts ties with him.
So, what happened in season 2, episode 9 of Landman? Here’s a breakdown of everything that took place, from Cami's decision to fire Tommy to Ainsley's dorm room drama.
Why did Ainsley move out of her college dorm?

Ainsley’s first taste of college life begins with a weeklong cheer camp at TCU — but it quickly goes sideways after she meets her roommate, Paigyn, a sports medicine major.
Paigyn explains that the pairing isn’t temporary: They’ll be sharing the same dorm again in the fall. They then introduce Ainsley to their ferret and launch into a discussion about pronouns before laying out strict room rules — no meat and no music.
“This is my safe space, and I need my environment crafted to support my mental health,” they explain.
After stepping out to accommodate Paigyn’s daily noon meditation, Ainsley heads straight to the admissions office to plead her case with advisor, Greta (Miriam Silverman). Greta refuses to change the housing assignment, urging Ainsley instead to have a mature conversation with her roommate.
Frustrated, Ainsley calls her mom, and Angela comes to her rescue. She marches into Greta’s office and demands a waiver from freshman housing so Ainsley can live off campus.
“That is by far my favorite [solution]. However, she requires a medical reason,” Greta says. Angela quickly counters with “allergies.”
Greta agrees to draw up the paperwork, and Angela immediately books Ainsley a room at a nearby luxury hotel for the remainder of cheer camp.
Why did Cami throw a party in Louisiana?

Demi Moore as Cami Miller, Stefania Spampinato as Bella and Andy Garcia as Gallino in 'Landman.'
Cami throws a launch-day watch party in Louisiana to mark M-Tex’s offshore drilling project getting underway. The guest list includes Tommy, the company’s legal team and her investor, Gallino (Andy Garcia).
Also in attendance are two representatives from M-Tex’s insurance firm, Blanton — the same group that previously warned of legal action unless the company used its $400 million insurance payout to drill a new offshore well.
“This wasn’t what we meant when we said proof of launch,” Robert (Bradley Snedeker) says to M-Tex attorney Rebecca (Kayla Wallace), taking a jab at the luxurious affair featuring a buffet lunch and an open bar.
“Well, I’d say this proves it, though. Don’t you?” she fires back dryly. “Hopefully, you see our commitment to honoring our obligations.”
Moments later, the tension gives way to spectacle as the group watches the oil rig float past, headed for deeper waters.
Why did Cami fire Tommy?

Demi Moore as Cami Miller and Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris in 'Landman.'
As the rig drifts past the party, Cami pulls Tommy aside to a quiet table away from the celebration. Tommy has opposed the offshore well from the start — a gamble with only a 10% chance of success — and the disagreement has long strained his relationship with Cami. He makes little effort to hide his skepticism, and Cami seizes the moment to confront the rift between them.
She admits that the “rush” of betting on the well has helped her understand why her late husband, Monty (Jon Hamm), loved the oil business so deeply. Tommy confesses he once chased that same high, but says years in the industry taught him to “do anything to avoid it.”
“You work for a company built on that risk. Built by my husband, who thrived on it, who built a fortune because of it,” she says. “[The] president of my company can’t be averse to the very thing that built it. You’re fired.”
Tommy is left stunned as Cami walks away.
What happened to Ariana?

Paulina Chavez as Ariana in 'Landman.'
In season 2, episode 3, Ariana (Paulina Chávez) was bartending at The Patch Cafe when she got into a heated confrontation with a customer. After he made derogatory comments toward her, Ariana threw a glass at his face, drawing blood, and the man was banned from the bar.
At the end of episode 9, however, the customer resurfaces — and this time, it’s far more dangerous. He corners Ariana in an alley behind the bar and forces her to the ground with the intent to sexually assault her. Before he can go any further, her fiancé, Cooper (Jacob Lofland), arrives and rips him off of her, repeatedly punching the man in a fit of rage.
“Cooper, stop! You’re killing him. Don’t go to jail for this piece of s---, please. Don’t do that to me,” Ariana screams.
Cooper finally stops and helps Ariana to her feet, the two clinging to each other in relief. But when the attacker groans, “I’m hurt,” Ariana pulls away — and delivers a sharp kick to his gut.
