Kim Kardashian has been forced to defend herself after facing backlash for posting some vacation snaps when her grandmother's death was announced.
The SKIMS founder was criticized on Instagram after sharing photos from a recent trip with her boyfriend, Lewis Hamilton, her four children and her sister, Khloe Kardashian, on Thursday, July 16. But the timing of Kim's post raised eyebrows as shortly after it was published, Kris Jenner announced that her beloved mother, Mary Jo 'MJ' Shannon, had passed away at the age of 91.
"Today, we said goodbye to my beautiful Mommy MJ [sad face emoji and broken heart emoji]," Kris, 70, wrote. "There are no words that could ever capture what she has meant to me or the heartbreak of having to say goodbye," she added in her emotional statement.

"My mom was the heart of our family. She taught me everything that truly matters … to love your family fiercely, to be kind, to show up for the people you love, and to never take a single moment together for granted. She taught us that family is everything."
Around the same time, Kim's vacation post went out on the social media platform - with many fans hitting out at the Kardashian star and accusing her of being insensitive. One wrote, "Your grandmother died Kimberly."

"Didn't your grandmama just pass? This couldn't wait to the weekend," another commented. "Didn't MJ just die and you posting this? WOW," a third added.

"lol. Your grandma just died," a critic said, as someone else wrote, "Girl, what about your grandma!?" But after facing widespread backlash, Kim decided to speak out, clarifying that the post had been scheduled by her team "a few days ago" before her grandma passed away, adding that she had been by her family's side at this difficult time.
Kim wrote in the comment section, "This post was scheduled a few days ago before we lost MJ, so its timing came right alongside her passing. I've been by my mom and grandma's side this past week, and my heart is completely with my family right now. We love and miss her so deeply, and in the days ahead, we'll be focusing on celebrating her beautiful life."
She then went on to share a separate post with photos of her beloved grandmother, paying tribute to her and saying she was "the woman who showed me what it meant to be a hardworking businesswoman." Kim wrote, "My sweet Grandma MJ, my best friend, my gossip buddy, my forever twin... You taught all of us the importance of family, and those values are something we'll carry with us forever!!!!!

"You were the woman who showed me what it meant to be a hardworking businesswoman. You gave me my very first job at your store in San Diego and taught me lessons about work ethic, strength, and confidence that I've carried with me ever since.
"You always believed in me, championed me, and were my safe place. You truly were the matriarch of our family, and your love is woven into all of us. I know you're at peace now. Give Papa Harry, Aunt Karen, and my dad a hug for me. You will always be a part of me, I love you soooooo much and I will miss you forever and ever. YOU ARE THE BEST OF US!!!"
She added, "I know you are up in heaven, looking at all of our Instagram posts of you from your sneaky finsta account you would always use lol." After Kris announced her mom's death, many people expressed their condolences, including Kourtney Kardashian's husband, Travis Barker, who wrote, "Thinking of sweet MJ. She will be deeply missed."

Donatella Versace commented, "I'm so so sorry to read this, Kris. Sending you all so much love." Beyoncé's mother, Tina Knowles, added, "So sorry for your loss iI know you and your mom were so close."
MJ was a survivor of both breast cancer and colon cancer. In a March 2025 episode of The Kardashians, Kris revealed that MJ's health was "frail" and that she was dealing "with so much." She had also been on bed rest for a few days because of some pain. "It just gets to the point in life where you can't be by yourself anymore. It makes me sad," a visibly emotional Kris said. "This makes me really sad. I just hate it when she's in so much pain."
Though MJ's exact cause of death hasn't been revealed yet, her battle with cancer has been documented on television. On an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kim revealed, "When she had cancer, the radiation shrank her intestines," adding, "So once a year, she had these crazy fits where she would be throwing up all night and literally think she was gonna die." MJ was also known as the anchor of the Kardashian family, helping craft their close-knit dynamics.
