Director Ol Parker told PEOPLE that Lopez and Goldstein had immediate chemistry, before production even started. “I had lunch with them way before we began, and we just laughed all the way through the lunch, and I was like, ‘Oh, this is gonna go great,” he said.
Office Romance also stars Betty Gilpin, Tony Hale, Amy Sedaris, Edward James Olmos and Bradley Whitford.
Parker teased that the movie is raunchier than Lopez’s past romantic comedies, which include Maid in Manhattan, The Wedding Plannerand Monster-in-Law. “It pushes the envelope slightly for what people might expect from a Jennifer Lopez movie,” he said. “She was delighted to do that and very funny doing it.”

For Lopez, the “fun, raunchy and romantic” script is what drew her in.

“It is a com rom! It’s a classic romance, with modern, edgier humor,” she told PEOPLE, noting that the Office Romance script “felt instantly special” and was “a new kind of romantic comedy that really speaks to the times.”
"I was booked back-to-back with other projects, but I knew I had to do this movie, so we made it work," Lopez adds. "I think it's exactly what we all need right now."

Goldstein, who co-wrote the film with Joe Kelly, told PEOPLE they wrote the script with Lopez in mind to play the lead character.
"We started asking ourselves who the best rom-com star is, and without hesitation, we both said JLo," Goldstein said. "It's easy to write a rom-com when you have JLo in mind. She's the best at this stuff. We just wanted to write something funny and smart enough to be worthy of her saying yes."

Speaking with PEOPLE, Lopez noted that her character is a “workaholic, incredibly controlled and not looking for distractions,” and is different from how she operates as CEO of JLo Beauty and her entertainment company Nuyorican Productions.
“Perhaps elements helped, but in real life, Jackie as a CEO and myself as a CEO are incredibly different,” she said. “Although I work incredibly hard, I understand the balance of work/life and prioritizing family and friends.”
Office Romance will be available to stream on Netflix on June 5.
