Forty-eight years ago, ’70s rocker Gerry Rafferty released “Baker Street,” his biggest commercial breakthrough that would define his career and carry on his legacy for years to come.

Released on February 3, 1978 as the lead single from his second studio album, City to City, “Baker Street” became a worldwide sensation. The song entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart on April 22, peaking at No. 2 in June for six consecutive weeks. In total, the song charted for 20 consecutive weeks.

“Baker Street” not only dominated the charts during the summer of ’78, but it experienced major commercial triumph via sales. The single went on to be certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for moving over 1 million copies in the U.S. alone. On a global scale, the smash hit sold over 5 million units.

Co-produced by Rafferty and Hugh Murphy, “Baker Street” is most recognizable for its iconic saxophone solo. The pair utilized bluesy electric guitar work, smooth bass lines and Rafferty’s melancholic vocals to root the song in its signature late-night, dream-like atmosphere, designed to immerse listeners into feeling like they are walking the streets of a busy city.

The track’s sound plays off its lyrical themes of yearning for a more meaningful life. Written by Rafferty, “Baker Street” captures a man who is struggling to deal with big-city living. In 2024, Ultimate Classic Rock ranked their picks of the top 40 best soft-rock tracks. “Baker Street” secured the No. 11 spot among other notable hits such as Carly Simon’s 1972 song “You’re So Vain” and Carole King’s 1971 song “It’s Too Late.”

In the digital era, Rafferty’s No. 2 single proves its continued perseverance. On Spotify alone, “Baker Street” has garnered over 351 million streams, attesting to its long-lasting ability to bridge the gap between generations of audiences.
