Ed Harris said he filmed a singing scene for an early episode of Dutton Ranch that was cut from the final version
The scene was one of the first things Harris was told about his character, local vet Everett McKinney
“That, to me, was enough reason to say I’m voiding my contract,” he said
Ed Harris said one of his biggest Dutton Ranch moments didn’t make the final cut.
In a red carpet interview with Varietyon Monday, July 20, the actor, 75, was candid about his experience on the hit Yellowstone spinoff, which follows Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) as they relocate from Montana to Rio Paloma, Texas.
Harris, who played local vet Everett McKinney in the series, revealed that he filmed a scene singing in a bar that wasn’t included in the episode. He said the decision “really pissed me off.”
“One of the things they told me before I signed on: ‘Hey, you get to sing in the bar,’” Harris said. In the scene from episode 2, “I’m talking to Kelly at the bar, and Cole comes in and says, ‘Okay, Everett, come on, it’s your turn.’”
“I walk up to the mic, and they cut it. They cut the song out,” he said. “I’m going, ‘F--- you people.’”

He clarified that the scene was filmed but didn’t make the final edit. “We did it. They cut it. They didn’t show it. They said it was too ‘up’ for the dark ending of that episode,” he said, adding, “That, to me, was enough reason to say I’m voiding my contract.”
Harris also told Variety, in the interview conducted at the Los Angeles premiere of Apple TV’s The Dink, that he was “frustrated” by his experience making season 1 of the Paramount+ show.
“Prior to signing on for it, I was talked to quite a bit about what the season was, and what my character was going to do, and that I was one of the four main characters. And that wasn’t really the case.”
He said that he made his concerns known. “I said, ‘I’m feeling underused and inconsequential,’ and they kind of went, ‘Oh.’ ”

Harris said he signed up for two seasons and was told his character “will have a little bit more to do” in the second. “It just was just a little frustrating, to tell you the truth. … When I watched this season— and it’s fine, and I thought it’s pretty good. I felt fine about what I did in it, and it seemed like I was relatively important to the story, but the doing of it did not feel that way,” he said.
PEOPLE has reached out to Paramount+ and series creator Taylor Sheridan for comment.
In an interview after the season 1 finale aired earlier this month, Reilly, 48, told TV Insider that season 2 will “feel very much more Ed’s show.” Season 2 will also have a new showrunner.
“This is not the Beth and Rip show. This is Dutton Ranch, and there’s four lead characters,” she said.

Harris and fellow costar Annette Bening, Reilly said, “made us legit.”
“We could have just been a little soapy spinoff and we’re not because of them. We’re a drama, we’re a new show, and it’s got some heavyweights in it. We’re very proud to be working with them.”
Season 1 of Dutton Ranch is now streaming on Paramount+.
