Colorado politician Joe Anderson, Englewood’s mayor pro tem, died while hiking on Quandary Mountain in Summit County
Deputies were called to Quandary Mountain to respond to a hiker who had lost consciousness and was not breathing
Anderson, 45, was known for his work on homelessness, affordable housing and infrastructure after a 2018 flood
Colorado residents are mourning the loss of a local leader after he died during a hike on Quandary Mountain.
Joe Anderson, Englewood’s mayor pro tem, “died this morning while hiking in Summit County,” according to an Aug. 28 news release from the City of Englewood. The Denver Postreported Anderson was 45.
CBS Colorado, the Denver Gazette and 9News reported that Summit County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the the lower slopes of Quandary Mountain for a report of a hiker who had lost consciousness and was not breathing at around 6:40 a.m.
Deputies said that other hikers had begun performing CPR. Law enforcement and medical personnel took over.
The hiker died at the scene, and his official cause of death will be determined by the coroner.

In the city’s announcement, officials remembered Anderson for his work in infrastructure following deadly flooding in 2018, as well as his advocacy for adopting “15-minute city” principles — in which necessities such as work, shopping, education and healthcare are accessible within a 15-minute walk, bike ride or public transit trip — and his homelessness policy.
“Anderson was an active member of the Englewood community in the years preceding his election to council, serving in a number of pastoral roles for local churches, helping found the nonprofit coalition Change the Trend, and coordinating the community’s largest annual service project, Be a Tool (later Neighborhood Rehab Project), for many years,” city officials wrote. “His leading role in Change the Trend laid the groundwork for what would become the Tri-Cities Homelessness Policy Committee.”
The mayor pro tem, who was first elected to the city council in 2019 and became mayor pro tem in December 2023, was an advocate for people experiencing homelessness, affordable housing and bicycle and pedestrian safety and more.

“We are all shocked and saddened at the sudden passing of our friend and council member, Joe Anderson,” said Englewood Mayor Othoniel Sierra.

“Joe was always there to lend a hand, whether it was in his role as friend, neighbor, pastor or council member,” Sierra continued. “Before his time on council, he advocated for the unhoused with his work on Change the Trend as well as helping seniors and disabled neighbors with home repairs through his Neighborhood Rehab Project. That compassion carried over to his seven years on council.”
Outgoing City Manager Shawn Lewis also reflected on Anderson’s death, stating that he was a “rare combination of a constant encourager behind the scenes while simultaneously challenging us as staff to think bigger and do better.”
“He was one of the most effective, productive and positive council members I’ve ever worked with, and he was more than just a boss,” Lewis said. “He cared for me and other staff members as people, asking to pray over me when my parents were hospitalized during COVID and making a point to check in on me personally when city issues were particularly hard. I’ll never forget the kindness and care he showed to me and I know so many others throughout his time on council.”
Anderson’s current term was set to end in November 2027.
“This is a tremendous loss for our city and our heart goes out to his family and friends during this time of loss,” Mayor Sierra added.
